Divorce and Separation

When parents separate or divorce it is normal for young people to experience many complicated and strong feelings, including shock, anxiety, a feeling of loss, anger or guilt.

The young person sometimes becomes a “messenger” between parents which increases their distress. There are often changes in their life and routine which may be difficult to accept and adds to their anxiety, such as custody and access arrangements, moving home, seeing less of one parent, a change in the relationships with extended family members, a change in family finances and their parent(s) dating again.

If you have concerns that a young person is struggling with a parents or a families separation, try talking and listening to their concerns. Further help and advice can be found using the related links below.
