Safeguarding

The Government has defined the term ‘safeguarding children’ as: ‘The process of protecting children from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development, and ensuring they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care that enables children to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully.’

Safeguarding children and young people is everybody's responsibility. Professionals need the knowledge and skills to identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns.

Professionals need to be able to recognise when a child or young person is not achieving their developmental potential, or when their health is impaired; and being able to identify sources of help for them and their families.

It is important to identify concerns as early as possible so that children, young people and parents and carers can get the help they need.

If you have concerns about a child or young persons safety you should contact the DHFT Safeguarding Named Professionals:
